Bernedoodle lifespan

If you are looking into adopting a Bernedoodle, you are probably wondering about Bernedoodle lifespan. These are great animals, and can make a perfect companion for the right family. But how long do Bernedoodles live?

Short answer: Bernedoodle lifespan is probably around 13-15 years, depending on their breeding, genetics, health condition and care.

This is actually an interesting question because no one really knows. This is because Bernedoodles are a fairly newly developed breed and we just don’t yet have the statistics for average Bernedoodle lifespan.

What we can suppose, however, is that Bernedoodle lifespan is somewhat comparable to Bernese Mountain Dog lifespan and Poodle lifespan as those are the two parent breeds of Bernedoodle mix.

Bernese Mountain Dogs lifespan, unfortunately, isn’t that long. On average, they  tend to live around 7-10 years, depending on their health. A lot of Berners pass away early because of some health issues that they are especially prone to, such as Malignant Histiocytosis.

This is a type of aggressive cancer that seems quite prevalent in Bernese Mountain Dogs. Other health conditions can play a part too, such as Degenerative Myelopathy. Even if you don’t take health issues into account, Bernese Mountain Dogs are large dogs, and all large dogs do tend to have shorter lifespans than smaller dogs.

The other side of Bernedoodle parentage – Poodle – can definitely boast a longer lifespan than a Bernese Mountain Dog. They can live as long as 12 -15 years which is a nice healthy lifespan for a dog. Poodles also don’t tend to have any grave health conditions outside of the ones that are normal for any breed. This is definitely a pretty hardy breed.

With that in mind, you can likely expect your Bernedoodle to live up to 13-15 years of age. Of course, it also depends on how healthy your Bernedoodle is and how well you take care of them. Being a mix of Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog, a Bernedoodle can inherit health conditions from both sides of its lineage.

Compared to Bernese Mountain Dogs, a Bernedoodle, luckily, has less chances of having something serious such as Histiocytosis. Even so, you need to make sure you are paying close attention to your pup’s health and provide them with suitable nutrition and adequate levels of exercise.
